Yumi Kim Quartet – ‘Emergence’ (2019)
Yumi Kim is a jazz pianist performing in South Korea and the United States. Her first album ‘Emergence’ is an extension of her inspiration that began by her master’s thesis [Tribute to Thelonious Monk: ‘My Dear Thelonious’] during her year in Berklee Global Jazz Institute.
After completing her bachelor and master programs in Berklee College of Music, she moved to New York to pursue a professional career as a jazz musician with strong music skills built in Boston. Performances and works with various musicians in New York deepened her creativity and originality in jazz music and motivated her to move to the advanced track from the level field.
Yumi’s music has been greatly influenced by Thelonious Monk, a great pianist who inspired generations. Monk’s famous quote “A genius is the one most like himself.” inspired her to develop her own music style and sound, with a strength in rhythm approach. Her highly sophisticated voicing, lines and an excellent sense of swing carry meaning and weight on every note.
Besides Monk, other prominent musicians such as Bud Powell and Barry Harris, as well as modern artists like Herbie Hancock, Danilo Perez, and Brad Mehldau have influenced Yumi not only
on her musical aspect, but also on the aspects of her life, philosophy and the ability of expressing music from the heart.
Her first quartet album ‘Emergence’ recorded in New York with her production in August 2019 features bassist Ben Street, drummer Adam Cruz and trumpeter Jason Palmer, who are Yumi’s teachers and among the world’s most renowned jazz artists. In the production of the album featuring four original songs and three standard songs, Yumi’s immense talent in composing and arranging contributed to creating a perfect and beautiful ensemble with the

jazz masters.

김유미 퀄텟 – ‘Emergence’ (2019)

한국과 미국을 오가며 활동하는 재즈 피아니스트 김유미의 데뷔 앨범 ‘Emergence’는 그녀의 버클리 글로벌 재즈 인스티튜트의 석사 논문 [Tribute to Thelonious Monk : ‘My Dear Thelonious] 로부터 시작 되고 발전되어 완성 되었다.

그녀는 보스턴 버클리 음대 학사와 석사에서 쌓은 탄탄한 기본기를 바탕으로 음악적 커리어와 영역을 확장 시키기 위해 뉴욕으로 이동 하였다.

뉴욕 현지의 다양한 뮤지션들과의 연주 활동과 음악 작업을 통해 그녀의 음악은 재즈 음악의 독창성을 가져오기 위한 창의력을 발휘하며 더이상 레벨 필드에 머무르지 않고 다음 챕터로의 진보된 트랙으로 도달 하였다.

그녀의 음악에 큰 영향을 준 Thelonious Monk 의 명언 “A genious is one who is most like himself.” 처럼 Monk 는 그녀의 음악이 유일무이한 그녀만의 사운드를 가지게 했고, 리듬 접근 방식에 강점을 두게 하였다.

매우 정교한 그녀의 보이싱과 라인들, 뛰어난 스윙 감각은 모든 음에 많은 의미와 무게를 싣는다.
Monk 뿐 아니라 Bud Powell, Barry Harris 그리고 현 시대의 Herbie Hancock, Danilo Perez, Brad Mehldau 등 은 그녀에게 음악적 측면 뿐 아니라 인생과 철학 그리고 마음에서 음악을 표현하는 측면에 까지 폭 넓게 영향을 끼쳤다.

그녀의 첫번째 앨범 김유미 퀄텟의 ‘Emergence’ 는 세계 최 정상의 재즈 연주자이자 그녀의 스승들인 베이시스트 Ben Street 과 드러머 Adam Cruz, 트럼펫 연주자 Jason Palmer 와 2019 년 8 월 뉴욕 현지 녹음, 그녀의 프로듀싱으로 제작 되었다. 네 곡의 오리지널과 세 곡의 스탠다드로 구성된 이번 앨범에서 그녀의 탁월하고 유니크한 작편곡 능력과 연주가 재즈 거장들과의 완벽한 앙상블 조합과 호흡으로 아름다운 한 팀을 이루어 내었다.
